DEMOLISH or FULLY RENOVATE University Village Apartments

The buildings that constitute University Village Apartments were first constructed in the 1950’s, and were only designed to last 25 - 30 years. Last month, NEARLY 35 YEARS after their set expiration, one of the building’s walkways collapsed, fatally injuring Lt. Bruce Britt of the City of Columbia Fire Department.
The University has known about the structural problems at University Village for years, yet they have continually chosen to put students in danger instead of solving the problem. The Columbia Daily Tribune recently reported: "A 2008 draft of the Graduate and Family Housing Master Plan says that 'deteriorating metal decks' at University Village 'are a safety hazard.' It identifies other structural deficiencies such as termite-damaged wood structures, aging windows, and "damp" and "musty" interiors caused by inadequate waterproofing ventilation."
University Village Apartments primarily serves non-traditional, low-income students with small children. It is bad policy to encourage one of the most disadvantaged and vulnerable portions of the student body to live in buildings that are structurally unsafe.
University officials have a moral obligation to ensure the safety of all individuals living in Residential Life facilities, and until University Village comes down it will continually fall short of fulfilling that obligation.
