Due to the recent outbreak of COVID-19, Universities across the country have sent college students home, gone online, and taken other precautionary measures. The University of Minnesota recently announced its decision to cancel all commencement ceremonies for the class of 2020. While this is entirely understandable to prioritize safety and wellbeing, U of M students have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars, four+ years, and worked tirelessly to gain their degree at this institution--the least they deserve is the chance to walk across a stage and receive recognition. For many people, commencement marks the celebration of an important and meaningful achievement: being the first in their family to graduate college. To take away this day for them would be devastating because of what that walk across the stage represents. This is a monumental moment in all students' lives, and to have this celebration of achievement taken away is heartbreaking. This petition is a call for the U of M board of regents to reschedule graduation at a time when the threat of COVID-19 is no longer imminent: to give thousands of students the recognition they deserve--it's the least the U can do after student's hard work and their millions of dollars in tuition payments.
