University of Michigan should Make Finance & ESG Data Available to the General Public
Why this petition matters
The State of Michigan has seen a consistent deterioration of environmental conditions, as exemplified by the "poisonous water" in Flint, Michigan. The same trend is also happening at the national scale.
In the financial market, there is an emergent push toward socially responsible investing, which means we not only evaluate a company by its financial performance, but also by its environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG).
The University of Michigan has a rich set of financial market datasets for socially responsible investing and ESG trends (ref1, ref2). Unfortunately, the University has refused to make these valuable data available to the general public. As investors and stakeholders of the US democratic system, we are entitled to better transparency of the social & environmental impacts of the public traded companies, many of which have offices in the state of Michigan. Economic growth at the expense of the society and the environment is a zero-sum game and should be exposed and discouraged.
I hereby petition the University of Michigan to make its ESG and other relevant financial market datasets available to the general public for better transparency and social discourse.
