Disappointed College Student started this petition to University of Michigan

As students at the top public school in the US, our time is extremely valuable. Yet the University has not done a good enough job allocating the use of our class time—specifically in regards to discussion sections. I have heard from hundreds of students that discussion sections are taking valuable learning time out of the day and in return provide little to no assistance with course material. Making discussion sections optional would enhance—and help facilitate—the conversation as people who attend would want to actually engage with the material (rather than meaninglessly contributing for the participation credit). I am disappointed with the Universities way of trying to spark student discussions, as it usually results in an inefficient use of class time and a lack of substantive topics.
