Install skateable space at the University of Michigan
Why this petition matters

Skateboarding is rising in popularity, especially among younger people, such as college students. It's a healthy way for people to express themselves and connect with others. It improves your mood and is a great form of exercise.
However, the University of Michigan has a strict ban on skateboarding anywhere on campus, with a fine of 110 dollars and a confiscation of your skateboard until you pay it back. The University has legitimate apprehensions regarding property damage, and therefore, utilizes defensive architecture in the form of "skate-stoppers" to prevent the activity from taking place. However, people continue to skate on campus due to a lack of alternatives. Step outside your dorm room, and the concrete planter that was never intended to be used for skating becomes an obstacle.
All of these measures are understandable, but we believe that providing an alternative space on campus to practice the craft will reduce property damage and provide other co-benefits, such as youth engagement, a recruitment tool for the university, and an enjoyable event for people to spectate.
Ann Arbor's graffiti alley may not completely prevent graffiti from occurring where it isn't preferred, but it reduces the occurrence and provides a safe outlet for those who want to participate in it. It has now become a landmark of downtown Ann Arbor.
Skateboarding infrastructure is always a good investment, as it will rarely not be utilized due to the popularity of the sport. Skateboarding will only increase in popularity, as it will be in the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics. Its participation transcends demographics and unites all people. Let's make a skateable space on campus happen!
