Recently the University of Michigan - Flint Residential Housing Department sent out an email saying that they are considering taking away Riverfront Residence Hall as an option for the Fall. This would force all students who want to live on campus to stay at First Street Residence Hall.

After this announcement there have been many concerns regarding this potential change. The first being safety. One of the perks of Riverfront is the attached parking ramp that allows students to get directly in and out of the building. At First Street students would be required to park across the street and walk at what could be precarious times of the day or night.

Another concern is that many of us have already picked our housing preferences for next year, whether that be room type or roommates. By switching to a different building with limited options, this could create unnecessary stress that would impact classes and education.

Finally, a major benefit of Riverfront is a gym in the building, a theatre area, pool tables, ping pong tables, and a student lounge. All of these give student the ability to socialize and also maintain physical and mental health.

All of these reasons are why UM-Flint and housing should rethink any decision to close Riverfront for the upcoming semesters and allow for students to stay there. Go Blue!
