The proposed parking facility for Michigan State University is shown in the above photo.
In signing this petition, I acknowledge that I have read the detailed information available on www.gogreenblue.org. I am in complete agreement with the sentiments put forth and the process recommended to solar electrify North Campus as a demonstration program to develop best practices for deployment on all U of M buildings.
In order to insure optimum economic and technical performance, the University of Michigan clean energy program should be guided by the following principles:
The U of M shall own the means of production of clean electric energy - solar panels, power conditioning, storage, and associated mechanical and electric materials.
The U of M shall integrate all clean energy projects into each building on the demand side of the meter utilizing secondary land space - rooftop/south side of facility.
The U of M shall provide partial solar canopies over student/staff parking lots for charging the growing fleet of plug-in electric vehicles - including charging stations.
The U of M shall install bus stops with a stand alone solar power system for enhanced safety, security, information services, and protection from the elements.
The U of M shall install stand alone solar systems along pathways at reasonable intervals for lighting, security, and protection from the elements.
The U of M shall require all solar installations to utilize secondary land space - on rooftops, over parking lot, bus stops, and pathways - and primary land use applications shall be prohibited.
As a premier global educational institution for 200 years, the University of Michigan leadership must surely agree with the students, faculty, parents, alumni, and admirers that all know in their hearts that science tells us the earth is on a perilous path that must be addressed as soon and as aggressively as possible. It is time for the University of Michigan to live up to its claim to be “the leaders and the best” and implement an aggressive solar electrification program that serves as a model for the rest of the world.
