Patrick Collins started this petition to University of Massachusetts Amherst

In 2016, 48.3% of college students voted on Election Day, a substantial increase over 2012 numbers, showing that more college students are getting out to vote. Despite these trends, higher education institutions deny students the day off on November 3 to go to the polls as it is not technically a federal holiday.

Like many institutions, the University of Massachusetts Amherst does not give students the day off on November 3, which coincides with Election Day. As a result, this can prevent many students from going to the polls on the day of elections because they are too busy with in-class commitments to go and vote. To combat this, this petition will be directed to the UMass administration for the sake of giving all future Election Days off to increase participation in United States elections and ensure that student voices are accounted for in elections.
