To Park or Not to Park: Parking for UMD Students should be Free

As a transfer student, I knew going to the University of Maryland would be much more expensive compared to the community college I attended. The one thing I didn't realize, as a student, I would literally have to pay for everything, including parking.
Parking as a student at UMD ranges from $147 to $767, depending if you are a resident student, a commuter student, or if you just want a quick overnight storage.
To me, this is just absurd. Tuition alone at UMD ranges from $10,180 to $32,044 for in-state and out-of-state students. In addition to the tuition, students have to pay for mandatory fees, such as athletic fees, building fees, health center fees, technology fees, shuttle bus fees, student activities fees, as well as room and board, rent, meal plans, books and supplies, and so much more.
Not only does UMD charge their students for parking permits, but they will also charge students who lack parking permits so they can be fined up to $75 and a $20 "late fee" for failing to buy one when they should have.
To ensure that only UMD students park for free, students would have to show their ID to an attendant at the entrance of the lot.
I am asking that people understand the inconvenience of this issue, as numerous students have expressed their feelings towards this issue. Please sign this petition to allow UMD students to park for free.
