TRIGGER WARNING: domestic abuse.

Sunday night I got a call stating that my baby cousin — Amy Rendon — had been physically assaulted by Bryan Vargas, a student at Marist college where she also attends. Sunday night, Bryan got in Amy’s car to “talk things out” after an argument. He proceeded to yell at her for “lying to him” and called Amy every name in the book. He beat her right thigh so bad that Amy still two days later cannot stand on it and she continues to have trouble walking. Her right arm hurts to move and she has a bruise on her chest where he threw a phone at her. Once she got away from him & managed to drive off, Bryan sent threatening texts and Snapchat’s saying that he would do things like “come finish her off,” that he would be waiting outside the house for her, and that Amy needed to be careful. Aside from the physical trauma Amy endured, she has been mentally tormented by this boy since her freshman year at Marist started. This boy controlled Amy through fear and tore away at her self-confidence in order to make her believe she was worth nothing to anybody else BUT him. At 19-years-old, Amy is a victim of domestic violence.
Bryan Vargas is currently a member of the Marist football team — being a former student athlete, I know this is not the way to represent not only yourself but the university as a whole. Marist college has been giving us the political responses to our worries about Amy being on campus with her abuser. I spoke to the Vice President, the head of security, and interim Title IX coordinator of Marist and essentially, because this did not happen on campus we cannot file a Title IX complaint. The resources offered to Amy were along the lines of giving Amy separate housing away from him and things of that nature to keep them away from each other — not once was expulsion or anything of the sorts brought up. I also sent a separate email to the President, security, the football coach, and the athletic director to which only security responded offering their full support and condolences for Amy. Only after a separate school-based investigation has finished will the school consider expulsion. We have taken matters to the police & Amy has been granted a temporary restraining order, by 4/7 Amy will have had her hearing for a permanent restraining order. We need Marist college to be as cooperative as the police. We all know how internal school investigations involving the assault of a woman where the abuser is a student athlete goes. Anyone who knows Amy can attest to the kind of young woman she is—funny, beautiful, smart, & has a passion for the fashion program at Marist that she does not want to have to step away from. I will not stand by and allow yet another boy be given a second chance at potentially killing my sister or somebody else’s sister.

Amy has given me her full permission to share her story and get the word out so Marist can be a safe space for her. Attached are pictures of Bryan Vargas along with threatening text messages he has sent Amy for months now. Please help place pressure on the school to do the right thing.
