I think Universities world wide, need to keep the public and students of the Modern world inform of Middle eastern studies. The views given by the lectures have to have a balanced view though.

As a former student of Middle Eastern Studies I am appalled that a university of Manchester's stature would consider closing the department, particularly at a time when knowledge of Middle Eastern history and languages is so important to counter extremism, foster understanding and provide security at a national and international level.

As a professor of Jewish studies and History with a PhD in Middle East Studies from Manchester, I am shocked to learn of the decision, which will damage the stature of the university as one of the leaders in this field of study.

I studied in the Middle Eastern department, Turkish language, Ottoman as well as Middle Eastern history and religion. It is an amazing department. The Middle East is an area that needs to be studied and understood, it's one of the most diverse and beautiful areas in the world that has given us so much culture and knowledge. It is also one of the most troubled areas. If we cannot understand it and know it how can we benefit it. Please do not close this department down - please keep it open for other students to enjoy and gain from and for the future of our world.

In a world of more and more global interconnections, and more and more in need of understanding of other cultures, one finds it extremely difficult to understand the decision to cut one of the most prestigious departments in this area in the UK.
