Why this petition matters

The purpose of this petition is to encourage University of Maine executives to acknowledge the problem on our campus, as well as make students, faculty and the public aware of the problem. The lack of lighting on the University of Maine Orono campus can pose as a safety hazard for faculty, students and the public. It is important to the safety of all students, faculty and the public to recognize this issue before any serious issues occur.

It has become apparent to a large group of students and faculty that this problem has been ignored for an extended period of time. On this campus, we have long periods of time where it is dark on campus as we head into winter. There are many parts of campus that have limited if not any lighting throughout, pathways are ill lit and appear unsafe to the general eye. The University of Maine has placed emergency call boxes throughout campus but they are spread quite far apart which would lack in purpose in the moment of emergency. With the limited and outdated lighting throughout campus as well limited emergency call boxes on campus we hope this petition will serve as a source of change within the universities community. Not only is the limited lighting dangerous to those walking on campus but also those traveling through campus. The limited lighting does not provide drivers with adequate judgement while driving. Not only would lighting assist those walking on campus but also those driving throughout campus, and provide adequate visibility to those in the long dark hours on campus.

With signing this petition, we hope it will bring attention to the University of Maine executives and that they will recognize and acknowledge the possible hazards of the limited campus lighting and limited emergency call boxes and create change throughout campus.
