In light of recent events due to the Covid-19 pandemic, The University of Louisiana at Lafayette has made the decision to cancel the commencement ceremony for its Spring 2020 graduating class. In lieu of an actual ceremony, the university has decided to hold a “virtual” ceremony, which will consist of a presentation with headshots of students who are graduating. While the world is certainly dealing with larger issues at the moment, many students from the Class of Spring 2020 feel as if UL is forgetting how important this achievement is for many student of the university. Many are first-generation college students, who have worked very hard for years to achieve their degrees and to get to participate in a graduation ceremony. At this moment, it truly feels as if UL is forgetting about the people who make this university what it is, and the people who hold this university so close to their hearts. We are asking UL to show us the respect and courtesy we deserve by giving the class of Spring 2020 a real graduation ceremony. We are asking the university to take the time to properly reschedule our graduation so that we can have the same recognition and celebration as other graduating classes before us.
