Lauren Hudson started this petition to University of Lincoln (University of Lincoln)

I think that it is great that the university has stopped taking further rent payments from students in university owned accommodation, this would mean they are able to keep their maintenance loans from the government which will enable them to support themselves during this crisis. However, the rest of students that are in private rented housing are still being made to pay rent for empty properties, using their maintenance loans and in most cases, their own money too, consequently leaving them with little or no money to financially support themselves during Coronavirus.

The university of Lincoln strongly recommended that all students return home due to the Coronavirus epidemic, and yet many are still having to pay rent for their home in Lincoln. Some have lost their part time jobs, have 0 hour contracts or may even be trying to work more shifts elsewhere in order to make up enough money for their upcoming rent payments, and consequently putting themselves at an increased risk every day. Many may even have rent/board and living expenses at home and simply cannot afford both.

I believe that something needs to be done about this. Many private landlords can not afford to lose any rent payments from tenants due to mortgage/bills etc, and most are simply refusing to terminate contracts early, despite the university strongly recommending that they do.
Therefore I believe that the university should be treating all students equally in regard to rent payments by financially supporting those in private housing, not just the ones in uni owned accommodation. I have proposed that the University put forward a grant scheme specifically designated to students that have returned home on the initial advice form the university, but are still being made to pay rent by their landlords. It is incredibly unfair that many students are being put under increased pressure and stress to pay rent for a property they are not living in, through no choice of their own. All students are still being expected to keep on top of uni work as well - having to worry about whether they can pay their rent is an added burden that they should not have to carry.

Please sign your name on this petition if you think that the university should be treating all of their students equally during these uncertain times!

Thank you
