This year, university students have been treated extremely unfairly. In January 2021, the UK went into another lockdown. The University of Leicester strictly advised students not to return to halls accommodation unless on an exempted course (e.g Medicine) or if their working conditions at home were unsuitable. The university committed to "fair" rent rebates for students who have not used their rooms or other facilities. Students were under the impression that they would receive a full refund for their unused accommodation, after paying over £2000 for this term's rent alone.

However, the university has now decided that students will only be able to get a 50% rebate. This is completely unfair to students who haven't been back to halls since December. Why should students, many of whom are from disadvantaged backgrounds, have to lose thousands of pounds for a room they haven't even been using? Furthermore, there have been several cases where the university has refused to let students cancel their accommodation contracts, despite committing to "flexible accommodation contracts". Students cannot afford to lose so much money - we have already had a disappointing university experience due to coronavirus.

Nobody should have to lose so much money for unused accommodation - the university needs to reconsider these rebates, because it is completely unfair for students to lose 50% of their rent payment. Some of the University of Leicester accommodation is terrible, and students have been living in awful conditions with mould, leaks and malfunctioning heating. This is not what we paid for. Students who have not used their accommodation since Christmas deserve a 100% refund of their January rent payment.
