Students are devastated with the decision made to cancel the Modern Languages Summer Schools, and instead assign us a portfolio. We understand that the situation is very delicate and unforeseen, and that the Summer Schools would have been unable to take place as planned during this difficult time.

However, it is extremely unfair on students to completely cancel the Summer School outright. The Summer School is part of our degree and the portfolios can not even begin to compare to what we have missed out on. Many students chose the University of Leicester because of the Summer School as it was something uniquely offered by the university, therefore, something needs to be done to compensate for this loss.

We believe the Summer Schools need to be rearranged/postponed or that students should be compensated for this great loss of a brilliant opportunity.

Furthermore, it needs to be highlighted that students will not be in the same position as previous students before us who had the opportunity of attending the Summer School. Our language level will not meet the standard that is usually expected of students at this stage of the course when entering second year, as the portfolios can in no way compensate for what has been missed and what we would have learned by spending three weeks in the country of our target language. It also needs to be added that on top of the loss of the Summer School experience, throughout this year students have missed out on weeks’ worth of teaching due to multiple strikes, and the second semester being cut short due to COVID-19. This once again means that students’ language progression has been significantly hindered, therefore making the Summer School experience even more important.
