Encourage the University of Leeds to grant all their staff the unconstrained right to participate at the upcoming global climate strike [1, 2] by signing this petition.

School students have been leaving their classrooms every Friday to raise awareness of the current climate emergency we are facing. The coming global climate strike on the 20th of September, organised by the young people, is hoped to be the largest mobilisation yet, and they are keen to involve as many as possible outside of the schools.

The University of Leeds has announced that it shares the protesters' deep concerns about the climate crisis and accepts the need for comprehensive, sustainable and enduring action [3]. To demonstrate this, it is calling for a 30-minute stoppage and participation of their staff. The official stoppage period is between 12 to 12:30pm.

Although we welcome the University's concerns and symbolic support, we think that the climate crisis deserves more than 30 minutes of our attention. In our opinion, a thirty minutes stoppage stands in no relation to the scope of the crisis and to its detrimental consequences already experienced by many people living in more vulnerable regions around the world. We strongly believe that members of staff should be granted the right and be encouraged to join the young protestors at Millennium Square at 11am on Friday 20th September to make their support visible to them as well as to the city council and the wider global community.
