On March 26th, 2021, the University of La Verne announced having a virtual Spring 2021 commencement ceremony due to “not having the capability.” Despite the limitations that have been presented through the Public Health Services in California due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many California State Universities will be taking the initiative to host a hybrid Spring 2021 graduation ceremony, alongside exploring outdoor locations for an in-person commencement. They will commemorate their student's achievement with the proper guidelines to provide safety as a priority and share a memorable milestone for all graduates. The Spring 2021 University of La Verne graduating class is composed of several first-generation college students, in which many of us have dreamt of celebrating this amazing accomplishment that recognizes our success as graduates of the University of La Verne. Thus, we are aware that this COVID-19 pandemic changes the traditional commencement ceremony, therefore, we suggest the University of La Verne consider a hybrid graduation, drive-through graduation, or a hybrid-split model for our undergraduate/graduate cohorts to meet capacity requirements.

Through our contribution with the graduation fees that have been collected in Fall 2020 and Spring 2021, we are asking the University of La Verne to kindly grant us this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that will be appreciated by all ULV graduate students, family members, and our community at La Verne University.

Resuming the Spring 2021 semester term, The University of La Verne is allowing students back on campus with a hybrid and a hybrid split model. Upon return, the campus has embedded a safety plan for students and faculty to follow. By mirroring these safety plans and accordances, the University of La Verne can grant a safe commencement ceremony  for the Spring 2021 class. We have the commodity of the Ortmayer Stadium. According to the University of Laverne’s Athletic facility, the Ortmayer stadium holds just over 1,300 people. Per CDC and MDH guidelines, at 25% capacity, this would safely hold a 325 hybrid or hybrid-split graduation ceremony, which meets regulations.

It was deeply disappointing to hear that the University of La Verne will partially open its campus grounds to students, while we will be having a virtual ceremony. While we recognize that the University of La Verne is a smaller school, precautions can be taken to safely accommodate all graduating classes in-person, while families or loved ones  watch via an online streaming platform. Students are the heart and soul of the University and its associated community. As the mission for the University of La Verne states “cultivate a caring, reflective, and just community in which students take responsibility for their own actions, practice responsible citizenship, respect diversity, and respect the rights of others”, we will advocate for our hybrid or drive-through graduation for the Spring 2021 class.
