UH Hilo Students First started this petition to University of Hawaii at Hilo Office of the Chancellor

We, the UH Hilo students as well as the citizens of Hilo, Hawaii, demand for UH Hilo's Modern Dance class to be reinstated and offered for the Fall 2019 term.

Lecturer Anne Bunker has a high level of expertise and creativity that are very much needed within the dance department as well within the community, as her pieces of work are rich in diversity and inventiveness. Her knowledge and skills make for a better-rounded dancer. What Anne shares in her Modern dance classes allow one to fully understand and become in tune with their body. She is very attentive and assures that we each move through the techniques and positions properly. This is a very important foundation for dancers since we all would like to have the ability to continue to dance as we age without any body issues or pains from executing movements improperly throughout the years. What Anne shares allows and prepares dancers (even novice dancers) for a promising professional career in dance. What one will also learn while taking Anne Bunker’s Modern dance class are life skills that one can utilize outside of the classroom, such as improving motor skills and better understanding how to move in their bodies correctly as they move throughout their everyday life.

Dance is a form of language that is spoken by everyone globally regardless of ability, disability, or even culture. Dance is important to any thriving community and our Hilo community is no different. The Big Island attracts many students from around the world. Only offering two forms of dance at UH Hilo does not allow for the option of expansion nor diversity. In the dance arts, Modern dance techniques are known to hold just as much value as Classical Ballet and Jazz. Only offering Ballet and Jazz at UH Hilo especially does not prepare those who seek growth in dance professionally. All in all, not even allowing us the option to take this course limits the potential growth of the students and is not in the best interest of our community as a whole.
