BP are sponsoring an event at the University of Edinburgh on Wednesday 11th March called "Whose job is it to fight climate change – activists, voters or the people?". BP can no longer buy themselves a place at the debating table and during a climate and ecological emergency it is completely unacceptable to be hosting fossil fuel industries on campus. The Principal accepts the facts of the climate emergency and claims that the university is "deeply concerned by the climate crisis and wants to make a significant, sustainable and socially responsible impact". This warm welcome to BP casts serious doubt on the credibility of these claims.

Newcastle University has shown that they are listening to their students and are dedicated to climate action by cancelling the same event on their campus. The University of Edinburgh must follow suit if they are to be seen as legitimately concerned about the climate emergency.

BP are a world leader in fossil fuel production, which is the primary cause of climate breakdown. They commit numerous human rights abuses on communities that they operate beside and an investigation by the Guardian revealed that they donated $500,000 to the inauguration of Donald Trump and pushed the White House to cut environmental regulations such as the National Environmental Policy Act to make new projects like pipelines and power plants easier to implement. BP is a member of the American Petroleum Institute which has actively campaigned against climate action and undermined climate science. BP also donated $13m to a campaign that successfully stopped a carbon tax in Washington state.

The company engages in continued greenwashing of its brand to present a more Earth-friendly image, but its intention to increase production by 20% over the next 10 years show that its only obligations are to its shareholders. We have less than 10 years to halve global carbon emissions for a chance of staying at 1.5C warming. BP's plans would help condemn the world to climate chaos at 2.0C of warming and beyond. By providing BP with a platform on campus, Edinburgh University is complicit in these actions and is acting in contradiction with its statements on the climate emergency and its commitment to full divestment from fossil fuel companies by 2021.

This is not an issue of freedom of speech since there are not two sides to this debate. BP has not and will not listen to reason or science since these are in direct confrontation with the company's continued survival and business interests. BP must either radically transform its industry to renewable energies or it must close down. With no intention to do the former, BP cannot be allowed to monopolise or confuse debate on the latter. Edinburgh University has given BP a platform to appropriate climate justice discourse and greenwash its own ecocidal practices which are a fundamental driver of the climate emergency.

We call on the University of Edinburgh to cancel this event immediately, and to no longer offer fossil fuel companies the platform to host their events on campus.
