The University of East Carolina announced recently that the executive governor of Kano State in Nigeria Mr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje will be honored with a visiting professor role for his accomplishment in genuine governance and human capital development.
Kano State under his watch is currently the theatre for human rights abuse and violations.

On the 28th of April 2020 Mubarak Bala the president of Humanist Association of Nigeria was arrested in his residence in Kaduna State for blasphemy, and was on the following day transported to Kano state where in gross violation of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Kano state, he has been held incommunicado and barred from seeing his newly born child, wife and even lawyers. Mubarak Bala till this day has not been charged to court and neither has he been released.

Also Mr. Yahaya Sharif-Aminu a 22 years old singer was charged for blasphemy at a sharia court in Kano. He was not offered legal representation and neither was the case against him proved. His trial was also carried out secretly of which he was sentenced to die by hanging. Gov. Ganduje on whose watch this happened has pledged his support to this abuse of human rights by saying he would not hesitate to sign the death penalty against Yahaya.

In similar vein, a 13 years old boy, Omar Farouq was charged for blasphemy. While he was in detention, he was arraigned before a Shari’a court in Kano state without legal representation. His trial was conducted secretly and in Hausa instead of English the language of the court. He then was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment with hard labor.

So many organizations and countries like Amnesty international, French Embassy, Germany embassy, has written to Gov. Ganduje to use his office to afford the kid at least a fair trial even if he won’t be offered clemency. The director of the Auschwitz Memorial Museum even volunteered to offer himself to be imprisoned in exchange for Omar Farouq. Neither the Kano state government nor the Nigerian government intervened despite being in enormous position to correct the human rights violation.

Mr. Ganduje being honored with the role of a visiting professor at the University of East Carolina to mentor students and teach governance and international affairs is an endorsement of these human rights abuse and violations by the University, a gesture which is unacceptable.

What we demand is that the University of East Carolina immediately relieves Governor Ganduje of his duty/award as a visiting professor in the University as he is not fit to become a mentor especially in the field of governance until he at least takes steps to confront the human rights violations in his State.
