Letter to
University of Colorado President Bruce D. Benson
In order to protect the health and safety of University of Colorado (CU) employees and students as well as cultivate an environment consistent with the educational mission of our institution, we, the undersigned faculty, staff, students, parents and community members stand opposed to the new CU policy permitting firearms on our campuses and in our classrooms. Given the recent Colorado Supreme Court decision (March 2012) concerning Colorado’s Concealed Carry Act (2003), we are aware that CU has been compelled to reverse its 42-year ban on firearms and must now allow those with Concealed Carry Permits to carry firearms on campus, in classrooms, in cafeterias, offices, and even into the campus daycare center. Because the regulation of firearms on campuses does not violate the 2nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, a point most recently expressed in the U.S. Supreme Court decision District of Columbia v. Heller (2008), we request that the University of Colorado seek a change in Colorado law in order to reestablish CU Board of Regents jurisdiction over the regulation of firearms on CU campuses. University campuses are places of work and study, but they are also high stress environments, particularly for students dealing with family, financial, social, and psychological challenges. The intentional introduction of firearms into this environment only increases the chance of deadly violence. Indeed, the mere presence of guns on campus will adversely affect learning environments where ideas should be exchanged free of fear. Our top priority should be education.
