Postpone CU Boulder Spring 2020 Commencement

Due to the global challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the University of Colorado Boulder has suspended all in-person events for the rest of the semester. On behalf of the Class of 2020, we request that the Spring Commencement and departmental ceremonies be postponed rather than canceled. This petition serves to bring attention to the desires of the student body.

Given the current public health situation, commencement on May 7, 2020 is likely unfeasible. The CDC recommends against large gatherings for the next 8 weeks, which would directly impact the Spring 2020 Commencement. Universities similar to ours, including UC Irvine and UMichigan, have elected to cancel their commencement ceremonies. Others are still at odds trying to decide how to move forward with these decisions. We understand the difficult situation faced by universities across the country and believe safety is the top priority. The University of Colorado has been highly effective in its efforts to combat the spread of COVID-19, while also acknowledging the needs of students, faculty, and staff. We believe that by postponing graduation, CU can continue to prioritize safety while still preserving this milestone event for many members of our community.

College graduation is a once in a lifetime event. Graduation commemorates years of hard work, personal growth, and contributions to our Boulder community. Many of us will be the first in our families to graduate. From B.A. to Ph.D. degrees, there are thousands of students that would lose a moment they can never get back. Although the current situation leaves us with many unknowns about the future, we can mitigate difficulties around graduation plans by setting a later date.

We request the following accommodations be made to Spring 2020 Commencement:
1. Postpone graduation to a time in the late summer when the imminent danger of COVID-19 subsides.
2. If a summer ceremony is unrealistic, expand the Winter 2020 ceremonies and allow Spring graduates to walk in December.

It is our hope that officials at the University of Colorado Boulder listen to the Class of 2020 and help us make this momentous day happen, even if it has to be different than we imagined.

Students/Family/Staff: Please support the Class of 2020 by signing and sharing this petition! Stay safe!
