Honorlock, ProctorHub, and all other similar services are violations of student privacy rights and hugely unethical. Their use is enforced by coercion, as students are forced to waive rights to outside companies whose privacy practices cannot be effectively monitored and are unlikely to be FERPA compliant. What with the recent massive data breaches on American companies and Government agencies, there is absolutely no excuse for putting students’ data at risk in this way.

There are numerous easy ways to prevent cheating without using these softwares, such as writing unique tests, making tests long enough to require the full time to finish, doing more essay-based tests where plagiarism and similarity to other students’ work can be checked, randomized question order, multiple test versions, making tests deeper and more conceptual in nature, and many others. It probably would take a little extra work, but probably no more than it takes to learn how to use these ridiculous, complicated, poorly designed, and likely already comprised (SolarWinds hack) programs.

No instructor or university could possibly use these programs in good conscience. It is unconscionable.

It is unethical to require students to waive their rights under FERPA to a third party company in order to to pass a class.

We are forced to perform an unethical waiving of privacy through coercion: waive your rights or you fail the class.

Honor lock registers information about the use of my computer, which is a huge violation of privacy. It shouldn’t be utilized by UCF.
