Create a program to reduce restaurant food waste in Isla Vista
As a person who has worked food jobs both on- and off-campus, I've seen many products (most of which is food) be thrown away due to some foods not being able to be kept overnight. What I wish to implement is a program of food storage, or distribution, that will allow for restaurants both on- and off-campus to have a place they could send the food when it can no longer be commercially sold. This program could be an extension of the current food bank, where certain days a week the program could distribute the ready-made food for free to whoever needs it.
Due to the University's negligence, many students face housing insecurity and unit deficits. Expanding the current food bank system to distributes free, ready-made food that would have otherwise been thrown away could help reduce the stress of students in already difficult living situations.
By signing this petition, we can urge UCSB to use its connections to facilitate food collection and distribution while holding the university accountable for its role in creating stress for its students by creating more programs that can support the increased amount of people on campus.
