At the University of California San Diego, there is a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion requirement for graduating with a Bachelor's degree. This requirement does NOT include ANY of the disability classes at UCSD. It is paradoxical to promote inclusivity and proceed to exclude one of the largest communities that still face day-to-day challenges with discrimination. This community has faced discrimination and marginalization for centuries and people with disabilities are still seeking equal rights today! Promoting inclusion at UCSD should not exclude people with disabilities. The University of California San Diego says that inclusion can be defined as “the act of creating environments in which any individual or group can feel welcomed, respected, supported, and valued”. As of today, November 6th, the disabled community is not a part of this inclusion. The current DEI allows a plethora of ideologies to fulfill the requirement including race, ethnicity, music, history, social organization, early child development, and global issues. Through education, we can dismantle the systems of oppression that people with disabilities face, this is why it is important for the disability classes offered at UCSD to be included in this requirement.
