Revise the UC Flu Vaccination Executive Order for Employees and Students IMMEDIATELY

On July 31, 2020, exiting UC President, Janet Napolitano, signed the 2020-21 Flu Vaccination Executive Order. “Effective November 1, 2020, all students, faculty, and staff living, learning, or working at any UC location must receive a flu vaccine.”

  • According to the California Constitution, all Californians, including UC students and employees, “...are by nature free and independent and have inalienable rights. Among these are enjoying and defending life and liberty, acquiring, possessing, and protecting property, and pursuing and obtaining safety, happiness, and privacy.”
  • Students and employees should be free to make their own decisions regarding medical interventions in consultation with their medical practitioners and without coercion.
  • A flu vaccine requirement without broad allowance for exemptions violates basic human rights, including the right to bodily autonomy.

We ask University of California President Drake to immediately address the 2020-21 Flu Vaccination Executive Order problem in one of three ways: rescind the executive order entirely, make the flu vaccine a recommendation only, or expand the exemption to include conscientious and religious beliefs for students and employees.
