Student Staff Ratio problems at the University of Brighton

Following our last two Student-Staff Forums this year (29th of March and 7th of June) where the issue of the Photography course at University of Brighton being understaffed has been raised, students would like to directly ask the University to consider increasing staff numbers in accordance with the increase in the number of students.
Students recognise that the large number of students put a lot of pressure on members of the technical and academic staff and this directly affects the quality of our course. Additionally, students recognise the health and safety issues when there are not enough staff members in working areas, such as specialist facilities like darkrooms and studios.
Although members of staff are extremely helpful, we believe having another member of staff would take a lot of pressure off the existing team and improve the quality of our learning. This becomes a particular concern around crucial course deadlines, as the work burden on staff becomes too much, significantly increasing staff and student stress in already stressful periods of the academic year. Additionally, in the event of staff sickness workshops and seminars end up cancelled as there is no contingency planning for such events.
We would welcome more workshops and contact hours and we know that the lack of the come down to staff shortage in light of the large increase in student numbers over the last few years. We are also aware that the course team has been vocal about this issue, and we would like to support them with our voice. We were told a year ago that an additional member of the academic staff would be employed, something that was promised in writing but a promise which has yet to be fulfilled.
