Christian O'Neil started this petition to University of Alabama

As students of the University of Alabama, we no longer want to wear masks at the University Recreation Center while actively exercising.

for the following reasons:

  •  Everyone is touching the same weights
  • People are more likely to touch their face while wearing a mask while working out
  • Perspiration promotes the growth of microorganisms within the mask
  • Off campus gyms are not requiring masks during physical lifting, and have seen no incline in COVID-19 cases
  • Auburn University requires masks only for entering and walking between machines

At the beginning of the semester COVID-19 cases were at an all-time high at the University of Alabama, since then we have had a declining number of cases. Many students are not properly wiping down the equipment; specifically, I rarely see free-weights sanitized after their use. I think the emphasis should move further away from having masks on the entire time at the gym, and more towards achieving proper sanitation of the weights and the machines we use.

A possible solution could be linking student act cards to COVID-19 clearance, so only those cleared to go to class and be active on campus could come to the recreation center. This would eliminate the possibility of those carrying or infected of COVID-19 from coming to the gym and potentially infecting other students. The school has done a great job of protecting our campus from COVID-19 through contact tracing and random testing. I believe it is time for us to take this step forward to returning student life to what it once was.
