Black Lives Matter Mural in University Hills & UCI

Dear Neighbors,

We have started a petition to UCI and ICHA to allow a Black Lives Matter street mural to be painted in University Hills and UCI. Given the excellent turnout at the Uni Hills Black Lives Matter march in June, we hope this demonstration will be seen as another important opportunity for our families and students to come together and show our support for the Black community and our commitment to social change. Our activism for racial justice can’t stop. We feel a street mural will keep the community energized, focused, inspired, and committed to this vital movement.

Our goal is to create a mural that is similar but smaller in scale to ones painted in Washington DC, New York, and numerous other US cities.

Step 1 is to secure a permit. If you support a BLM street mural in University Hills or somewhere near campus, please sign the petition.

Step 2 will be to identify a location once a permit is in place. We are suggesting Anteater at Peltason and/or Anteater at California for greatest visibility for those entering University Hills and UCI, while also allowing for an easy detour during the painting.

We’ve begun planning additional details and have the support of the Community Safety Diversity Working Group (CSDWG). We hope to include our Anteater Sports Community, our UCI Campus Organizations, our Arts community, Irvine Campus Housing Authority (ICHA), anyone and everyone, to join us in this endeavor. Our goal is to complete the mural before the November election so we can also promote the 'Vote' message. Given this urgency, we are hoping to for the strong response we know this community is capable of.

In Solidarity,

Annie-Marie and Lilli
