Why this petition matters

Started by Sarah Emmanuel

Today, March 5, 2021, our house and houses all around the Hill were asked to take down the chalk art from our front wall. Chalk art has been a Boulder tradition for decades, and one that promotes artistic freedom. In numerous leases, there is nothing that says we cannot create chalk art. We were told by University Hill Neighborhood Association that our chalk art was "offensive," but when asked if we could change it to something not "offensive", it was a simple "no." The University Hill Neighborhood Association reached out to the city of Boulder to make this an official ordinance.  I want to implore the University Hill Neighborhood Association to reconsider this as it is absolutely heartbreaking to have to take down so much beloved chalk art, simply to fit their needs and housing standards.

It is the University Hill Neighborhood Association and city of Boulder who are asking to take down the chalk art. No leasing companies have had problems with this in the past, so why now? Why stop a tradition that has been going on for so long that doesn't harm anyone, nor the house itself? We are asking for as many signatures as possible in order to ensure the future of chalk art can be sustained and for the existing chalk art to be kept.

Please consider signing this very small, but important issue.
