Hundreds of Thousands of Research Scholars who are pursuing their research in different universities across India are dependent on the crucial fellowship provided by the UGC for their livelihood.
Rs 5,000 and the Rs 8,000 stipends given to pre-doctoral and PhD students for 18 months and 4 years, respectively, is crucial for the thousands of scholars from poor families or lower-caste background.
The discontinuation of this fellowship is a step to make Indian higher education compliant with World Trade Organisation-General Agreement on Trade in Services requirements.
It is shameful how on the one hand researchers in India are, in the prime years of their lives, resisting any temptation to get easy jobs or are unperturbed by the pathetic research facility everywhere. They are working so hard to produce knowledge for our society. On the other hand, the government and UGC are hell bent at forcing them to give up their research even at the peril of future of higher education in India.”
