Amartya (name changed) is a brilliant child, gifted with a razor sharp intellect, an ability to develop deep insights in topics ranging from physics to philosophy, and ranks among the best brains in the class. He has one problem though - he cannot get into any good institution for his graduate and advanced degrees because of his inability to take formal, structured exams. When the same problem is discussed with him orally in the form of a conversation, he can solve it brilliantly. When put in a rigid, formal evaluative setting, he falters. This is not just due to exam nervousness, it is an innate neurological disorder which prevents him from "zeroing" into an expected answer in seconds.

Amartya is not alone. 1% of brilliant children are ADHD to an extent that they are classified as incompetent, are depressed and their potential is lost forever.  1% of children may seem like a small number, but this means 1 child in every school drops through the cracks.  This is the child who could do the school or college and ultimately, the society and country, proud.

It is very easy to help such children. All it needs is an alternate scheme of evaluation of tests and exams, where the same paper is evaluated in a 1:1 setting through a conversation and executive function issues (such as copying a number wrong) are overlooked or corrected during the evaluation. After all, how important in life is it to be able to copy numbers correctly ?

We are not asking for a dilution of standards, we are asking for the same standards, evaluated differently. Because such children are equal, but different !

Please join me in asking CBSE and UGC to allow such children to be evaluated in a different way.
