Aydan Greatrick started this petition to University College London

On the 4th October 2019, a newborn baby was tragically allowed to die in a prison run by Sodexo.

For many of us working and studying at University College London, a university which prides itself on its commitment to health, wellbeing and social justice, the university's relationship with Sodexo has long been a source of deep anger and frustration. This latest incident has persuaded us that enough is enough. We demand that UCL cease its relationship with Sodexo immediately.

Sodexo is a company that operates at odds with the values of the university. It profits from the detention of migrants and refugees, and has been found responsible for negligence and systematic failures in its management of five prisons in the UK.

This negligence - including the unlawful strip searches of female and transgender inmates - has amounted to “cruel and inhumane" treatment.

It is perverse that UCL would enter and continue a contract with a company whose profits stem from the mistreatment of some of the most vulnerable in our society. It is also unacceptable that Sodexo is the default provider of several services contracted by the university.

UCL prides itself as a vehicle for positive social change, the promotion of health and wellbeing, and social justice. It fails in its mission as an institution by contracting with a company that profits from the very worse forms of injustice.

We demand that UCL immediately cease its relationship with Sodexo, and commit to contracting companies that meet the values and ethos of the institution, its staff and its students.
