Sean Fetros started this petition to Universities of California and

We are petitioning the indefinite cancellation of the annual MESA Day at UC Campuses. There have been over 22,000 people that reside in 350 middle and high schools, 40 community colleges and13 universities in California. 22,000 is a big number, and we need to fix this. The children in middle school and high school who work on these projects have put in hours and hours of their time after school in order to complete their projects, they could have been doing something better with their time. Sadly, the hours and hours of work put in have gone to waste. The Universities of California, MESA and Google have decided to cancel these events due to COVID-19. The thing is, most of the people attending the event are under 30. According to the BBC out of the 4,500 cases in the world only 8 people under 30 have died, this means that 1 out of 582 people under 30 have the chance to contract COVID-19. Also, the odds of a person with the virus to come to the competition are very low due to the number cases in the United States. Even after these cancellations there have already been one MESA community who have already had their preliminary MESA day. That community is East Bay, it is only fair that the other people in the state of California who were planning on participating, participate. Keep in mind the people who spent hours of their time working of their projects will never get their time back.
