Say No to Depicting Political Violence

We as a country have been through one Civil War before, and we DO NOT WANT ANOTHER ONE! Let's stop even the depiction, however subtle, of political violence before it turns worse. Now, more than ever perhaps, we must stand for civility and love toward our fellow Americans. Together, we must make a commitment to reorient ourselves and our children away from the degradation of an endless viewing of violence which has infected our culture. This is a small step toward that end. But take it, we must!

Summary of "The Hunt" and its Problems

The movie "The Hunt" is described on Wikipedia as a film that "follows twelve strangers, referred to as 'deplorables' in the trailer, who mysteriously wake up in a clearing. They do not know where they are or how they got there. They discover that they have been chosen to be hunted in a game devised by a group of rich elites. The hunters gather in a remote facility called the Manor House, but their sport gets derailed when one of the hunted, Chrystal (Gilpin), fights back and starts killing them one by one."

This petition recognizes that the usage of the term "deplorables" is obviously referring to a statement made toward supporters of one candidate in the last presidential election, which signals an overt political messaging intending to (violently) pit sides against each other. Furthermore, this petition recognizes the characters being targeted in this film are apparently cast as the "protagonists" and meant to parallel actual real-life political participants--potentially serving, perhaps, to perpetuate a harmful "victim mentality." Equally wrongful, those doing the targeting in this film are apparently meant to be identified with the nebulous "rich elites," which not only risks promoting political violence but also perpetuates further a dangerous and misplaced view regarding class that dehumanizes and mischaracterizes our fellow countrymen.
