The University of California Davis has not made a good enough effort in informing students about the upcoming deadlines and fees. The Housing and Dining Services announced that the last day to cancel the housing contract with a forfeit of up to $500 with an additional cancellation fee of $250 was June 4th. However, students were unable to make a rational decision by the deadline because we were not given a firm decision about Covid-19 housing operations for the Fall 2020 quarter. It was not until June 16th that students were notified that fall courses were going to be 90% remote. It is very frustrating that students are expected to make such an important decision without being provided the necessary information first. Students should have been given information first before being forced to make a rash decision of either canceling or keeping the contract.
The Housing and Dining Services have decided to extend the cancellation deadline from June 4th to July 10th only because a majority of transfer students e-mailed addressing their concerns. However, students are still expected to forfeit up to $500, including the $250 cancellation fee while International students were provided a full refund. After July 10th any cancellation of the housing contract are going to be forced to pay for the entire Fall 2020 housing fees. It is absurd that students have to pay this immense amount of money when the school is at fault for not communicating properly with their students. On July 8th another announcement was made in terms of, extending the deadline to July 31st to cancel housing with the penalty of $500. In addition, we are well aware the $500 deposit is not refundable but, having to pay an additional $500 is unfair to students especially under these special circumstances.
