University of California, Merced Students started this petition to Univeristy of California and

The problem we, the collective student body of the University of California, Merced would like to solve is the unfair and outrageous learning expectations associated with the educational program Aleks. The program is designed to teach students different topics in place of classroom learning. After speaking with numerous students who agree that in classroom learning is a preferred way of learning, especially in mathematics. It was clear that we create this petition to create some sort of solution, an alternative to Aleks. We are demanding an option to learn in a classroom.

Aleks takes a majority of the day to complete a small part of the module that is due at the end of it the day. Not only does it lack in user interface, it only provides a summarized “text book” explanation for the user to read before attempting a new topic. This does not encourage learning and does not work in favor of the student. Students report spending upwards of seven hours in a row to complete only a section of the required module. Class time is spent taking quizzes not directly related to the work on Aleks. For a two hour class once a week students are forced to stay up for hours on end every-night in attempt to complete the module. For the price of a UC, students are not paying for an online course. Aleks does not teach the student and makes it difficult to focus on other class, for a remedial pre-calculus math class it does not make any logical sense to have students commit to such a large time commitment for a class that could have been completed in high school.

There are 35 other results advocating for the removal of Aleks. This shows the amount of students who feel as though they are not receiving the education they deserve. There is not an equivalent amount of learning to the amount of time students spend staring at the computer, continuously working, watching no progress grow. Please take a few seconds out of your day to sign this petition and help students who desire to learn receive proper education.
