Save Navid Afkari's Life, Iranian Wrestler Who Is Sentenced to Death

The Islamic Clerical regime has sentenced champion wrestler Navid Afkari from the city of Shiraz to double death for his participation in the 2018 anti-government protest. Under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), to which Iran is a party, all persons have the right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. The United Nations Basic Principles on the Use of Force and Firearms by Law Enforcement Officials provide that security forces should apply nonviolent means before resorting to the use of force, should use restraint, and minimize injury.

Navid and his two brothers were brutally tortured by the notorious Shiraz Intelligence Police, forcing false confessions of guilt when Navid's only "crime" was advocating for basic human rights.

We call on the International Olympic Committee, United World Wrestling, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the Global Players Union and the Sports and Rights Alliance, and international athletes alike to stand together advocating and pleading with the Iranian Government to #SaveNavid.

The Greco-Roman Wrestler, Navid Afkari sent a letter detailing his torture from prison that was published by human rights groups:

“They pulled a plastic bag over my head and kept it there until I nearly suffocated. They brutally beat my hands, stomach, and feet with batons while using vulgar language and insults. They also tied me and poured alcohol into my nose,” he wrote.

All political prisoners in Iran are in grave danger of being executed. Please Act Now and sign the petition to #SaveNavidAfkari from execution.

This petition and all signatures will be delivered to the International Olympic Committee on September 9, 2020, before the IOC Executive Committee meeting.
