More than 500 people die every day due to violence involving guns. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been more shootings this year within the United States as of November 14, 2019, than there are days in the year. Being able to own a gun is a right, even stated that way within the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution. It says “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed”. However, when this directly impacts the schools your children attend, something needs to be done, especially for the well-being of all students. The Trump Administration is pushing to arm teachers, even though there is not enough evidence that this will abrogate shootings in any way. Even the National Education Association (NEA) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the nation's largest teacher unions, were quick to oppose this idea. Trump also suggested that it wouldn't just be teachers, there could also be veterans on the scene. Yet Jay Kirell, a former veteran, said that "Cops and soldiers literally get paid to do this and most of them can’t shoot accurately under stress" stating that it would be difficult to accurately shoot at their targets under that type of pressure. Gun reforms shouldn't bring more guns into schools but instead should work to make it harder for potential dangers to have access to them. Harsher background checks should be implemented on those considering purchasing firearms. The goal should always be to keep students safe, and guns far away from them.
