The issue of DACA children is a thorny one for our political and social systems. A permanent solution is being delayed due to the political battle between the aisles of the House / Senate and the White House. According to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (“DACA”) policy which began on August 15, 2012, every individual can obtain an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) and will be lawfully permitted to work. The EAD puts the DACA individuals into a similar status of a Permanent Resident.

The DACA children who usually come from soccer immersed cultures, unfortunately, cannot be employed by the professional soccer leagues in the USA as players unless they take the spot from the quota allowed for foreign players.  On the other hand, the players with permanent residency are not treated as foreign players.  The DACA children can be employed in other businesses and industries with the same status as Green Card holder.

Becoming a professional soccer player for a Latino DACA kid might be a dream of their lifetimes. The current status of not allowing the DACA children to play professional soccer in the USA in the same status as the players with a green card is an obstacle for these kids to fulfill their dreams.

I have seen many DACA players that have been called up for a pro tryout just to be rejected, not because of their playing abilities but instead of their status.

I ask U.S. Soccer and the professional leagues to reconsider their stand on this ‘thorny issue’ and allow the DACA children to live their dreams by allowing them to play professional soccer in the same category as the permanent residents.
