Right now, in the year 2017, in the Southeast Asian country of Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, there is an ongoing genocide that will soon result in the extinction of an ethnic minority group named the Rohingya. The Rohingya have been called by the UN human rights council "the most oppressed people on Earth. They are being systematically persecuted, tortured, raped and murdered by the powerful extremist groups of the country's majority Buddhist population and often times government authorities. A report in 2015 by the International State Crime Initiative (ISCI) at the Queen Mary University of London concluded that "the Rohingya face the final stages of genocide" and that complete extermination is likely.
The 1.3 million Rohingya are a Muslim minority group from the northern Rakhine State in western Myanmar. Despite having lived there for generations they are considered "foreigners" by the government and are labeled as illegal Bengali migrants. They have been denied citizenship, stripped of all rights, and are forced to live in Apartheid conditions where they cannot travel, work, or even marry without permission. Over 140,000 were forced into concentration camps after their homes and villages were burnt to the ground in 2012 and remain there until today. This information was obtained using satellite imagery due to the government not allowing any human rights groups to enter Myanmar and conduct investigations.
Innocent men, women and children have been victims of unspeakable crimes including killing, being burned alive, finger chopping, rape, and many other forms of brutality, while the world is watching in silence. Hundreds of thousands were driven out of their homes. Even those who manage to flee face death by drowning or disease, or live in refugee camps.
Please act now to stop the genocide and ethnic cleansing being committed against the Rohingya people of Maynmar. Please work with the American Government to impose sanctions against the Maynmar government until it stops the ethnic cleansing and oppression commited against the Rohingya Muslims.
