m k started this petition to United States Senate and

S.4051, the Lawful Access to Encrypted Data Act, would require companies to provide backdoors into their encryption, whether it is a device such as an iPhone, or a texting service like WhatsApp.

This is especially dangerous considering that due to the pandemic, most people have shifted their communications online, and if passed, this bill would compromise security and safety, to both government and private actors.

Considering the recent abuse of power by law enforcement, which has shown the detrimental affects of expanding government policing power, it is clear that this bill will have detrimental affects on the interests of the people, especially those who are more vulnerable, such as targeted minority groups, activists, and public figures.

This bill, in addition to the EARN IT Act, would also extend government power over private companies, and would allow for further coercion of private companies to over-censor and align with the government's ideals, a dangerous power.

Under the guise of catching criminal activity, this bill would sweep away privacy at the hands of law enforcement, and compromise internet security. Considering recent events and actions by government officials, the dangers of this bill are exemplified.
