Zackary Smith started this petition to United States Secretary of Education

There is a rapidly growing demand for work in places that do not require knowledge on advanced math or science such as geometry or biology. The school system requires students to take classes where they are taught material that might not apply to their career choice in their future. We should be more focused on turning our students into responsible and independent citizens as we reach adulthood. We should be mandating classes that teach important life skills such as home repair or personal finance, and making math and science based classes the optional ones. The majority of students will never need to know the pythagorean theorem, but we will all need to know how to fix broken parts of our cars, homes, and how to pay taxes. We need to focus on equipping the students of our future with important life skills and not just information they may never need. If a student wan d to become a physicist they could choose to take the classes to learn the material, rather than it being enforced. Students who do not plan on following such career paths should not be required to take these classes that just waste their potential and chances at becoming beneficial to our society. Thank you for reading this far and listening to my voice and the voices of many other students.

Sincerely, Zackary Smith - Class of 2023
