"...the flag may be displayed twenty-four hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness."

During the day, the United States flag flies proudly at the United States Post office (South Hill branch) at the corner of 136th and Meridian in Puyallup, Washington.  The flag is in good condition and the pole is well maintained.  Unfortunately, after night falls, parking stalls and sidewalks get more respect (lighting) than our national flag.

At night, there are two small flood lights in the ground, pointing up at the flag, in an minimal attempt to light the flag.  Unfortunately, while the bulbs may be on, the under-powered lights do not reach the flag to properly illuminate it.  The flag is unacceptably in near total darkness, except for a faint glow from the nearby lights in the parking lot, and car headlights passing by on Meridian.

My dad was a Navy veteran, and my grandpa was in the Army Airborne as paratrooper in World War II, he flew in gliders into the front lines.  My uncle was in the Allied infantry, also on the front lines.  A US flag flown in the dark at night is disrespectful to them, and all the others who serve, have served, and especially to those who've died serving our country.  The flag at the Post Office (any flag for that matter) should either be taken down each night at sunset, and put up in the morning, or properly lit throughout the night. It's that simple.

I've attempted to contact both the South Hill Post office main telephone number and the downtown Puyallup Post office main number.  When I navigate to the post office manager’s phone number, I get their voicemail, but it says their mailbox is full.  This has happened each year over the last five years. I’ve submitted comments online to usps.com.  I’ve asked to speak to the branch manager on several occasions and only heard “I’m sorry, they’re not in right now”.  So, I am hopeful that this change.org method will get their attention and finally affect some change.

Should you have any doubts about the flag’s lighting, I encourage locals to take a look for themselves the next time they drive by.  For those of you out of town, I can assure you, the photos I took match how the flag looks to the naked eye at night.  If anything, they make the flag look more lit than it actually is.

I can write all I want here, but a picture says a thousand words.  Here is a link to an online album of photos of the flag during the day, comparing it with during the night (http://bit.ly/shillpoflag).  I don’t expect others to do what I do not do myself, I walk the talk.  Also included in that album is a photo of my personal flag at my home, which flies proudly every day.  My flag is well lit, properly lit, all night, dusk to dawn.

Finally, let me assure you, this petition has nothing to do with partisan politics, affiliations, or views.  It does, however, have EVERYTHING to do with proper respect for the flag of the United States of America and all it represents.  Thank you for showing your respect and support for our country, veterans, and current service members by putting your name to this petition.
