Stop Extrajudicial Killings of Americans by Police and Law Enforcement

Stop Extrajudicial Killings of Americans by Police and Law Enforcement
Why this petition matters
“The system cannot reform itself.” -Dr. Cornel West
1. Mr. George Floyd, like so many other people of color, was murdered by a member of the police.
2. When an member of the government acting in an official capacity murders a person with no legitimate fear of personal harm or without a trial and due process, it is an extrajudicial killing, a.k.a. a lynching.
3. State sanctioned racial violence never left America; it has only changed form.
4. The U.S. Justice System has consistently failed us, and thus cannot be trusted to reform itself.
DEMAND: A NATIONAL REGISTRY OF POLICE SHOOTINGS, DEATHS IN CUSTODY AND OFFICER RELATED VIOLENCE COLLECTED AND PUBLISHED WEEKLY BY A NONPARTISAN ENTITY.
Local oversight and review boards are a must for all police precincts. Independent investigations and prosecutions of crimes committed by members of the police are also non-negotiable. But now it is abundantly clear that national oversight of police violence can only be left to us, the People.
Communities of color have long suffered under police violence unseen. They must be seen.
White communities do not experience police violence at the same frequency and therefore do not see how communities of color are treated. They must see it.
Only the bright light of day will cure us of this rot.
This is simple: We, the People, demand to know what our government is doing to our fellow citizens.
There is no excuse for not collecting and making this information public. Knowledge is power; accountability will follow.
