Did you know that the United States incarcerates more youth then most countries?

My name is Jessica Rosado and I am an MSW student at Hunter College’s Silberman School of Social Work. For my Child Welfare Policy final project, I have decided to create an on line petition to help influence policy that creates more alternative to incarceration programs for youth.  According to the Sentencing Project, youth of color are arrested and detained at an alarming rate when compared to their White counterparts.  The disproportionate arrest and detainment of youth of color can have lifelong effects on our youth.  An adolescent who has spent time in detention is far less likely to attain a high school diploma or hold steady employment.  The entire juvenile justice process is encumbered with inequality and harsh treatment of youth of color.  Alternative to incarceration programs for non-violent youth can have a remarkable impact on youth through behavioral and mental health programs.   According to the Sentencing Project, here are the arrest outcomes by race in 2013.
