Stop Prisoner Disenfranchisement
This petition had 80 supporters
Incarcerated persons are citizens of this country just as much as anyone else is. The decisions made by the United States Government has an impact on them and their families. Upon entering the prison system the right to vote is taken away. This is legally wrong, violates key principles of democracy, and disenfranchises more than 6 million American citizens annually. The 15th Amendment gives all American citizens the right to vote as it says; “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” The United States prides itself on being a democracy but, prohibiting prisoners to vote goes against a major principle of democracy main; citizen participation. By signing this petition I hope to show Congress that disenfranchisement of Americans will no longer be tolerated. Sign this petition to show your support for prisoner voting rights and fight the current injustice.
