Abolish the sex offender registry! started this petition to United States Supreme Court United States White House

Currently there are over 900,000 registered sex offenders with ages ranging from as young as 14 years old. Sex offenders can’t get jobs, scholarships, or even join the military. They’re not allowed to own a laptop or smart phone, they are not allowed to be around children even if their crime does not involve a child. Most sex offenders end up homeless because jobs won’t hire them & they can’t find housing because of strict registry laws. Registrants have families too, but restriction laws push registrants to the margins of society. 20 years of study have shown that the sex offender registry does not make things better, but in fact it makes things worse, witch is the reason why the United States is one of the only countries that actually use this system. Sex offenders have the lowest recidivism in the criminal categories witch is about 5% with child sex crimes being even lower. States waste millions of dollars on a registry that does nothing to protect the public. We all want to protect children, but there are much better ways of doing it other than a registry, because registrants do not commit sex crimes against children, only first time offenders do. The registry repunishes people who have already been punished. The registry is a set up for failure that is based off of fear. Murderers, burglars, & terrorist are not forced to register, but sex offenders are. Please sign this petition and make a change.
