Amir HARITH started this petition to United States Federal Government

Earlier this year, the CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg apologised before the US Congress for "a big mistake" that includes exposing up to 87 million users' data to Trump campaign consultants (privacy breach where Facebook would be have to pay $5 billion), concealing an organised Russian effort to meddle with the election 3 years ago and continuously failing to regulate hate speech.

All of this stems from the fact that Facebook holds too much unchecked and unregulated power. They do this by monopolising the economy, "controlling" the options of our society and this directly harms our democracy. They are also probably not going to stop growing in the near future. The company holds more 80% of the world's social networking revenue already, and has become so powerful. This monopoly would also discourage would-be entrepreneurs from establishing alternative social networks, preventing innovation and restricting consumer options. By splitting Instagram and Whatsapp from Facebook, we can hope that these separate companies would try to introduce more privacy-sensitive options to match their own competitors.

The solution is in our hands. To make sure that the social media that we are using are more responsive to user concerns (privacy, better quality, more options etc), if we cannot turn away from this Digital Culture, what we can do is to provide check to their power. So sign this petition and bring back our democracy and the power of consumers.
